Mumbai–Konkan Travel Gets a Boost: Ro-Ro Ferry to Start from September 1

Mumbai, 28th August 2025: Good news for Konkan-bound travelers, as travel between Mumbai and the Konkan region is set to become faster and more convenient, as a new Ro-Ro ferry service will officially begin operations from September 1. This service will connect Mumbai to Jaigad in Ratnagiri and Vijaydurg in Sindhudurg, promising to cut travel time by nearly half.
Currently, a road trip from Mumbai to Vijaydurg takes a gruelling 10–12 hours. With the new sea link, passengers will reach Jaigad in just 3–4 hours and Vijaydurg in 5–6 hours. The ferry is designed to carry not just passengers but also vehicles, with space for 50 cars and 30 two-wheelers—making it a seamless option for tourists and locals alike.
The initiative is inspired by the successful Mumbai–Mandwa (Alibaug) Ro-Ro service, launched in March 2020, which quickly became a hit with commuters. Authorities now plan to expand this sea network further, with proposed links to Srivardhan and Mandwa jetties.
Union Minister of Shipbuilding Nitesh Rane, who personally inspected the vessel, hailed it as the “pride of Konkan”. The ferry will operate daily from Mumbai’s Bhaucha Dhakka Terminal, with the first departure scheduled at 6:30 a.m. Initially planned for Ganesh Chaturthi, the launch was delayed due to rough sea conditions.
With this service, Konkan residents and tourists will now have a third major travel option alongside the Konkan Railway and the Mumbai–Goa Highway. Officials believe the ferry will not only ease the festive rush but also boost tourism and trade in the scenic Konkan belt.
For frequent travellers, it marks the beginning of a new chapter in coastal connectivity, where the journey could be as refreshing as the destination itself.
