BMC Advises Residents to Drink Boiled Water After Heavy Rains as a Fix to Muddy Supply

Mumbai, 21th July 2026: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged residents to filter and boil drinking water before consumption after complaints of muddy tap water emerged from parts of Mumbai following continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days.

According to the civic body, persistent rainfall in the catchment areas supplying water to Mumbai has increased the turbidity of river water entering the city’s reservoirs. As a result, some areas in the western suburbs and city have reported receiving muddy water.

The BMC’s Water Engineering Department said measures are being taken at water treatment plants to reduce turbidity and ensure the quality of the water supply. Officials added that adequate chlorination is being carried out to maintain safe drinking water standards while the situation is being closely monitored across the city’s distribution network.

Mumbai receives its drinking water from a network of reservoirs located in neighbouring districts. During periods of intense rainfall, increased runoff in the catchment areas often raises the turbidity of raw water, requiring additional treatment before it is supplied to consumers.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad for Tuesday, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by winds of 50–60 kmph. Raigad is expected to remain under an orange alert on Wednesday, while Mumbai and Thane are also likely to experience heavy rain and strong winds.

In view of the forecast, the BMC has kept its emergency control rooms, disaster response teams and dewatering pumps on standby to tackle any rain-related emergencies, including flooding in low-lying areas and fallen trees.
