Mumbai Police Imposes Prohibitory Orders Across The City From July 23 to August 6

Mumbai, 21th July 2026: The Mumbai Police have imposed prohibitory orders across the city from July 23 to August 6, restricting the assembly of five or more persons in public places as a preventive measure to maintain law and order.

The order, issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Akbar Pathan under the Maharashtra Police Act, will come into force at 12:01 a.m. on July 23 and remain effective until midnight on August 6 across all areas under the jurisdiction of the Mumbai Police Commissionerate.

Besides restricting public gatherings, the order also prohibits processions, the use of loudspeakers and amplifying instruments, musical bands, and the bursting of firecrackers during processions, unless prior permission has been granted by the competent authority.

According to the police, the decision was taken following inputs indicating a likelihood of breach of peace, disturbance to public tranquillity, and potential danger to human life and property.

The order, however, exempts marriage ceremonies and related functions, funeral gatherings and processions, statutory meetings of companies, clubs and cooperative societies, social gatherings for routine business, and events held at cinema halls, theatres and other places of public entertainment.

Official work at courts, government offices and local bodies, academic activities at schools, colleges and educational institutions, and routine operations at factories, shops and commercial establishments have also been exempted. Public assemblies and processions permitted by the respective zonal Deputy Commissioners of Police or their supervisory officers will not be affected by the restrictions.

Police have warned that violations of the prohibitory orders will invite legal action, and investigations into offences committed during the enforcement period may continue even after the restrictions expire.

The prohibitory orders come amid heightened security measures following recent large public demonstrations in several parts of the country. Authorities said the restrictions are intended to prevent any disruption to public order and ensure the safety of citizens during the specified period.
