Mumbai: 15-Coach Central Railway Locals to Run on Kasara Route from September
Mumbai, 23rd July 2026: In a major relief for lakhs of daily commuters, Central Railway has announced plans to introduce 15-coach suburban local trains on the CSMT–Kasara route from September 2026. Around 15 to 20 existing 12-coach services will be upgraded in a phased manner to ease overcrowding during peak hours.
The initiative is expected to significantly benefit commuters travelling from Kasara, Shahapur, Asangaon and Titwala, where rapid residential growth and increasing passenger numbers have intensified congestion on suburban trains.
The expansion follows the recent conversion of 10 local train services on the CSMT–Ambarnath, Kalyan, Badlapur and Karjat routes into 15-coach trains. Encouraged by the positive response, Central Railway has decided to extend the project to the Kasara corridor. Officials said technical and operational planning is in its final stages, and a revised timetable is likely to be announced soon.
According to railway officials, each upgraded 15-coach train will accommodate an additional 800 to 900 passengers per trip, helping reduce overcrowding and improve travel safety and comfort.
Central Railway currently operates 152 suburban services on the CSMT–Kasara route, along with 299 services between CSMT and Kalyan and 201 services between CSMT and Thane. Despite the growing demand, authorities clarified that the overall number of suburban services will remain unchanged, with existing 12-coach trains being converted into 15-coach formations.
The expansion of longer trains is seen as another important step toward addressing rising commuter demand on Mumbai’s suburban railway network and is expected to provide much-needed relief to passengers travelling on the Kasara route.
