Karjat: Woman Killed, Biker Seriously Injured in Karjat-Khopoli Highway Crash; Locals Blame Incomplete Road Works
Karjat, 6th August 2026: A young woman was killed and a motorcycle rider sustained serious injuries after a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a WagonR car on the Karjat-Khopoli (State Highway 548A) near Shri Swami Samarth Math at Palsdari in Raigad district on Thursday morning.
The accident occurred at around 8 a.m. According to preliminary information, a group of friends from Takai was travelling towards Matheran. At the same time, a motorcycle ridden by Rohit Waghmare of Poshir, with his friend Sonali from Ambarnath as the pillion rider, collided head-on with an oncoming WagonR on a narrow stretch of the highway.
The impact of the collision was severe. Sonali suffered fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene, while Rohit Waghmare sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Sub-District Hospital in Karjat for treatment. An ambulance from Shri Swami Samarth Math, along with local residents, assisted in shifting the injured to the hospital.
Following the accident, local residents expressed anger over the condition of the Karjat-Khopoli highway, alleging that incomplete road work and inadequate safety measures have led to repeated accidents on the route. They claimed that several stretches of the road suddenly narrow without proper warning signs, barricades, or road markings, increasing the risk for motorists.
Residents further alleged that land acquisition issues have delayed the road project for nearly a decade, with several affected farmers yet to receive compensation. They also accused political leaders and government officials of delaying the compensation process, resulting in the highway remaining incomplete.
Locals questioned how many more lives would be lost before the road is completed and adequate safety measures are put in place.
Karjat Police have registered the case and are conducting further investigation into the incident.
