Mumbai: Kurla Landslide Claims 7 Lives; One Person Still Trapped Under Debris
Mumbai, 13th August 2026: Seven people, including three children, were killed and several others injured after a landslip struck Gaushiya Chawl in the Ashok Nagar area of Chirag Nagar, Mumbai, in the early hours of Wednesday, August 12, following heavy rain.
The landslip occurred around 3:48 a.m., when a portion of soil and debris from a hillside collapsed onto two to three houses at the chawl, trapping residents underneath.
According to civic officials, seven people were declared dead at Rajawadi Hospital. The deceased were identified as Mohammad Samir Ansari (14), Sahil Husen Abdul Kazi (19), Aban Arif Shaikh (2), Manat Arif Shaikh (4), Marjina Arif Shaikh (27), Viket Ramesh Yadav (27), and an unidentified person aged around 45.
Seven injured persons were shifted to nearby hospitals. Three of them — Farana Dilber Khan (28), Dilber Amnulla Khan (38) and Shamin Muslim Khan (26) — were admitted to Rajawadi Hospital and were reported to be in stable condition.
Four others — Sohel Ansari (18), Mohammad Ansari (14), Naimuddhin Eqbal Khan (28) and Sajid Ansari (16) — were admitted to Bhabha Hospital in Kurla. Their condition was also reported to be stable.
Rescue operation faces challenges
Rescue operations were launched immediately after the incident, with personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), ambulance services and BMC deployed at the site.
Officials said the rescue operation was challenging because the route leading to the affected area is extremely narrow, allowing only one person to pass through at a time. The restricted access has also made it difficult to deploy heavy machinery for the search operation.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site and reviewed the rescue and relief operations. She met the affected families and directed the agencies involved to intensify rescue efforts and ensure coordination among the teams.
The Mayor announced ₹4 lakh financial assistance for the next of kin of each deceased person and ₹50,000 for the medical treatment of each injured person.
BMC cites pre-monsoon warnings
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said it regularly alerts residents living in areas vulnerable to landslides and rockfalls and advises them to vacate or relocate from dangerous locations. Notices are also issued as part of pre-monsoon precautionary measures.
The civic administration said residents around Tekdi No. 3 in Ashok Nagar, Ghatkopar, had previously been warned about the risk of landslides, and awareness campaigns had been conducted in the area.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the risks faced by residents living in vulnerable hillside settlements during Mumbai’s monsoon, while rescue teams continued operations at the affected chawl.
