Vasai-Virar Garbage Crisis Deepens as 15 Lakh Metric Tonnes of Waste Pile Up
Vasai-Virar, 19th August 2026: The garbage management crisis in Vasai-Virar has intensified as nearly 15 lakh metric tonnes of old waste have accumulated at the Gokhivre-Bhoydapada dumping ground. The site is also receiving around 1,000 to 1,200 metric tonnes of fresh waste every day, putting further pressure on the already overloaded dumping ground.
Residents of Gokhivre and Bhoydapada have been complaining of foul odour, smoke and unhygienic conditions caused by the massive waste piles. During the monsoon, contaminated water seeping from the garbage reportedly flows into surrounding areas, worsening the situation.
The problem has been aggravated by the closure of a bio-methane project that was established to process old waste and reduce the size of the garbage piles. The project has reportedly remained shut for around a year. According to the administration, the process of appointing a new contractor to restart the facility is underway.
Residents have also raised concerns over occasional fires at the dumping ground, which result in thick smoke spreading through nearby residential areas. The pollution has affected air quality and, according to residents, has forced some people to keep their doors and windows closed because of the smell and smoke.
The garbage problem is not limited to the dumping ground. Several locations in Nalasopara, including Agrawal Nagar, Suncity and Shriprastha Road, as well as areas along the highway, continue to witness garbage being dumped in the open.
Meanwhile, establishments generating more than 100 kg of waste per day are required to segregate and manage their waste at source. Construction and demolition waste from buildings also needs to be disposed of separately. The debris generated from the demolition of 41 buildings has further increased pressure on available dumping space.
Residents and civic authorities have stressed the need to increase waste-processing capacity, ensure proper segregation of wet and dry waste, promote recycling and restart the stalled bio-methane project at the earliest.
With thousands of tonnes of waste being added every day, effective waste processing and stricter implementation of waste-management rules are crucial to prevent the garbage crisis from worsening further.
