Mumbai: New Rules for Ola, Uber and Rapido Drivers in Maharashtra; Marathi Knowledge Made Mandatory

Mumbai, 19th August 2026: The Maharashtra Transport Department has introduced a new set of rules for app-based passenger transport services such as Ola, Uber and Rapido. The new regulations will come into effect from September 1, making it mandatory for aggregator companies to obtain a licence from the transport authority and comply with several requirements related to drivers, vehicles and passenger safety.

Under the new rules, drivers of app-based taxis and autorickshaws will be required to have basic working knowledge of Marathi. Drivers who do not know Marathi will initially be given a one-month notice period to learn the language.

If a driver fails to comply even after the notice period, the driving licence will be suspended for three months. Continued non-compliance could lead to permanent cancellation of the licence.
