FDA Seizes 1,394 Kg Bananas Over Alleged Chemical Ripening

Navi Mumbai, 7th October 2026: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized 1,394 kg of bananas worth approximately ₹67,814 after allegedly finding bananas being ripened using a chemical solution at the Turbhe APMC market in Navi Mumbai.

According to officials, the FDA received confidential information about the alleged use of chemicals to artificially ripen bananas at a shop in the Turbhe APMC market. Acting on the information, an FDA team conducted a raid at the premises.

During the inspection, officials allegedly found bananas being directly dipped in a solution containing Ethephon, a chemical used for ripening fruits. The officials reportedly suspected that the chemical being used at the premises was spurious.

Following the action, the FDA seized approximately 1,394 kg of bananas, with an estimated value of ₹67,814.

The FDA has initiated further action in the matter, and a case has been registered at APMC Police Station. Authorities are investigating the source of the chemical and the circumstances surrounding its alleged use for ripening the bananas.

The incident has raised concerns over the safety of artificially ripened fruits being sold to consumers. Further investigation is underway.
