Mumbai: Eight Injured After Crane Topples Onto Houses During Eviction Drive in Mumbai’s Kurla East
Mumbai, 21st August 2026: Eight people were injured after a crane toppled onto nearby houses in Kurla East during preparations for an eviction and demolition operation early Friday morning, officials said.
The incident occurred at around 3 am near Buntara Bhavan, a MHADA building located behind Galaxy Apartment in Indira Nagar.
According to officials, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) was preparing to conduct an eviction and demolition drive at the site. A crane was being positioned for the operation when it suddenly toppled and fell onto nearby residential structures, injuring eight people.
Six of the injured were rushed to Sion Hospital, while two others were taken to Bhabha Hospital in Kurla. Hospital authorities said all eight injured people were in stable condition.
Following the incident, teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, 108 ambulance service and BMC’s L-ward were deployed to the spot. Rescue personnel assisted the injured and managed the situation.
The accident also disrupted goods train movement on the single-line Kurla–Trombay route of the Central Railway. Officials said part of the crane fell onto overhead electrical wires, affecting railway operations.
The incident raised questions about safety measures during eviction and demolition operations, particularly in densely populated residential areas. Authorities are expected to examine the circumstances that led to the crane toppling.
