480-Metre Sabarmati River Bridge Completed for Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Corridor
Mumbai/Ahmedabad, 03rd October 2026: Construction of a 480-metre-long bridge over the Sabarmati River in Ahmedabad has been completed as part of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor. The bridge rises approximately 36 metres (118 feet), equivalent to the height of a 12-storey building.
The bridge is located between the Sabarmati and Ahmedabad bullet train stations, around 1 kilometre from Sabarmati station and 4 kilometres from Ahmedabad station. It is situated near the Western Railway’s Ahmedabad-Delhi main railway line, which runs approximately 14.8 metres above ground level.
The alignment of the high-speed rail corridor in Ahmedabad crosses several existing infrastructure facilities, including flyovers, bridges, railway lines and metro corridors. The height of the bridge piers was designed to maintain the required vertical clearance over these existing structures.
Eight piers support the bridge
The bridge has eight circular piers, with diameters ranging from 6 to 6.5 metres. Four piers are located within the riverbed, two are positioned on the riverbanks one on each side and two are located outside the riverbanks.
The arrangement of the piers has been designed to minimise obstruction to the flow of water in the river.
Unlike most river bridges on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor, which have spans of around 40 metres, the Sabarmati River bridge incorporates longer spans ranging from 50 to 76 metres. The longer spans reduce the number of piers required within the riverbed.
The bridge comprises five 76-metre spans and two 50-metre spans. Each span consists of 23 segments cast in-situ at the construction site. The segments were constructed with precision engineering, skilled manpower and quality checks at different stages.
Built using Balanced Cantilever Method
The bridge has been constructed using the Balanced Cantilever Method, a construction technique used for long-span bridges over rivers and deep waterways.
Under this method, the bridge superstructure is constructed from the piers without conventional scaffolding beneath the deck. Segments are installed sequentially from the piers and connected through post-tensioning. Construction proceeds symmetrically on both sides of each pier to form a stable and continuous bridge deck.
18 of 21 Gujarat river bridges completed
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor includes 25 river bridges, comprising 21 in Gujarat and four in Maharashtra.
With the completion of the Sabarmati River bridge, construction has now been completed on 18 of the 21 river bridges planned in Gujarat.
