Mumbai: Maharashtra Reports Surge in COVID-19 Cases, Urges Heightened Vigilance Amid New Variant Concerns

Mumbai, 29th December 2023: Maharashtra, including Mumbai, faces a growing concern as the state reports a second consecutive day of a COVID-19-related death and a significant spike in new cases. With 117 new cases recorded in 24 hours, the state sees the highest figure in the past three to four months.
Mumbai reported 25 new cases, Pune Circle recorded 28, Thane Municipal Corporation had 13, Navi Mumbai registered 12, and additional cases were reported from regions including Nagpur, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Kolhapur, and Latur.
Maharashtra State Health Minister Tanaji Sawant addressed the situation, urging citizens to remain vigilant and exercise caution in the wake of the emergence of the new COVID-19 variant (JN.1). While stating that the variant is not considered dangerous, Sawant emphasized its high transmissibility.
The state’s Covid task force, led by Health Minister Sawant, concluded its first meeting, highlighting the crucial nature of the upcoming 10-15 days. The task force recommended increased surveillance and testing due to the virulence of the new variant. With the approaching New Year and anticipated visits to tourist and religious places, heightened vigilance is deemed necessary.
Dr Raman Gangakhedkar, the chairman of the task force, reassured the public that the new variant does not pose a significant threat. However, he advised senior citizens and individuals with underlying health conditions to exercise extreme caution. Dr Gangakhedkar highlighted the state’s readiness with healthcare facilities and the establishment of a drug manual for uniform treatment. The task force plans to issue necessary guidelines shortly to manage the situation effectively.
