CSMT–Sawantwadi Daily Express Flagged Off, New 510-Km Rail Link Strengthens Mumbai–Konkan Connectivity
Mumbai, 03 September 2026: A new daily Express train between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Sawantwadi Road was flagged off on Thursday, providing a direct rail connection between Mumbai and several towns across the Konkan region.
The inaugural service was flagged off by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, in the presence of other dignitaries.
The approximately 510-km service will connect passengers across Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts through a wide network of stoppages.
The train will operate daily as Train No. 15087 CSMT–Sawantwadi Road Express and Train No. 15088 Sawantwadi Road–CSMT Express.
Overnight Service Between Mumbai and Konkan
Train No. 15087 will depart CSMT at 11:55 pm and reach Sawantwadi Road at 2:15 pm the following day. On the return journey, Train No. 15088 will depart Sawantwadi Road at 5:20 pm and arrive at CSMT at 6:40 am the next morning.
The train will halt at:
Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Pen, Roha, Mangaon, Veer, Khed, Chiplun, Savarda, Aravali Road, Sangameshwar Road, Ratnagiri, Adavali, Vilavade, Rajapur Road, Vaibhavwadi Road, Nandgaon, Kankavli, Sindhudurg, Kudal and Sawantwadi Road.
The service will operate with an LHB rake.
350 Special Trains Planned for Festival Rush
Speaking at the event, Ashwini Vaishnaw said the new service addressed a long-standing demand for improved connectivity between Mumbai and Konkan.
He also said 350 special trains were being operated this year to handle increased passenger movement during the festival season. The number can be increased to 370 trains, if required, he added.
Piyush Goyal said the daily service would provide an additional rail option for people travelling between Mumbai and Konkan. He also highlighted its potential use by students, employees and families travelling between the region and Mumbai.
Goyal said improved connectivity could also facilitate movement of agricultural, fisheries and other local produce towards Mumbai as freight movement on the route increases.
Konkan Railway Electrification Highlighted
Eknath Shinde described the new service as an important addition for passengers travelling to Konkan, including those returning to their native places during Ganesh Utsav.
He also highlighted the completion of electrification of the 741-km Konkan Railway route, which has enabled electric train operations on the route.
₹18,000 Crore of Railway Works Underway in Mumbai
Vaishnaw also outlined ongoing railway infrastructure projects in Mumbai, stating that works worth around ₹18,000 crore are currently underway.
He said platforms designed for 12-coach suburban trains are being extended to accommodate 15-coach trains, with work already completed at several locations. The signalling system on the Mumbai suburban network is also being upgraded.
According to Vaishnaw, 238 new AC local train rakes have been sanctioned for Mumbai, with delivery of the first rake expected to begin in 2027.
He further said the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors are now 100 per cent complete and referred to the proposed East-West Dedicated Freight Corridor from Dankuni to Surat, which is being planned to connect parts of Maharashtra including Vidarbha, Marathwada and Western Maharashtra.
On the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project, Vaishnaw said construction was progressing, including work on the undersea tunnel connecting BKC and Thane. Two tunnel boring machines are currently working on the tunnel from the Vikhroli and Ghansoli sides.
Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, Maharashtra Minister for Ports Development and Fisheries Nitesh Rane, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde and other dignitaries were also present at the flag-off ceremony.
