MMRDA Initiates Plans for Circular Roads to Enhance Connectivity in Extended Thane

Thane, 24th November 2023: In response to the ongoing infrastructure development in Thane district impacting intra-city traffic, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has initiated efforts to establish circular roads connecting various state roads and highways. A positive discussion was held on this matter during a recent meeting, and plans are underway to invite renowned consulting companies to prepare a comprehensive plan.

The cities of Kalyan, Dombivli, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, Badlapur, and Titwala, collectively known as Extended Thane, are currently connected by state roads and national highways, requiring residents to navigate through the city to access these routes. To address this issue and streamline connectivity, MP Dr. Srikant Shinde proposed the construction of ring roads during the MMRDA meeting. Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee expressed support for the idea and announced the organization of a meeting with eminent consultants to formulate the plan. The proposed ring roads aim to facilitate swift access to highways, reducing travel time for motorists.

In addition to addressing intra-city connectivity, MMRDA is also considering plans for the affiliation of new state roads and national highways being constructed in the Mumbai metropolitan region. A meeting with the heads of all municipalities in the metropolitan region is likely to be organized to discuss and plan for this initiative. If implemented, these measures could significantly transform the traffic landscape in the Mumbai metropolitan region.

MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde provided an update on the progress of Metro 12, which is set to connect Kalyan, Dombivli, Kalyan Gramin with Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Mumbai. The tender for Metro 12 is expected to be announced in the coming days, marking a crucial phase in the construction of this vital metro project.
