Mumbai: BMC Issues Appeal Against Unauthorized Hoardings, Banners, and Posters in Mumbai

Mumbai, 25th January 2024: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a public appeal urging citizens, social organizations, and political parties not to display hoardings, banners, or posters on public roads and footpaths in Mumbai without prior permission. The directive comes in compliance with an order from the Bombay High Court, which prohibits the unauthorized placement of such promotional materials in the city and its eastern and western suburbs.

The BMC, through its licensing department, periodically conducts campaigns to remove unauthorized hoardings, banners, and posters, taking necessary actions against the parties involved. The BMC administration stresses the importance of obtaining prior permission before displaying any such materials and emphasizes the consequences of violating these regulations.

The list of officially approved billboards is available for reference on the BMC’s official website, www.mcgm.gov.in. The appeal is in line with the High Court’s directives, stemming from Public Interest Litigation Nos. 37/2010 and 155/2011. Unauthorized advertisements and promotional materials are prohibited on public roads and footpaths within the BMC’s jurisdiction without prior approval. Legal actions, including those under the ‘Maharashtra Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 1995 – 1995’ and Section 328/328-A, 471 of the ‘BMC Act 1988,’ may be taken against individuals or organizations found in violation of these regulations. Such actions may involve filing cases and court suits against the offenders.
