Mumbai Businessman Sushil Kedia Issues Apology After Marathi Language Controversy

Mumbai, 5th July 2025: Sushil Kedia, a prominent businessman from Mumbai, has issued a public apology following a heated controversy over his remarks on the Marathi language and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray. The incident began when Kedia posted on social media, challenging Raj Thackeray’s insistence on the use of Marathi and declaring that he would not learn the language. Kedia’s comments sparked outrage among MNS leaders, who responded aggressively, including reportedly vandalizing Kedia’s office.

In his initial post, Kedia questioned the difference between Raj Thackeray’s policies and those of a terrorist, stating, “What is the difference between the policy of a terrorist and Raj Thackeray?” He further asserted, “I have been living in Mumbai for the past 30 years but do not know Marathi well. As long as people like you act as protectors of Marathi people, I will not learn Marathi. What do you want to do? Tell me.” Kedia also highlighted his proficiency in five languages, including Hindi, Bengali, English, Gujarati, and Sanskrit, but maintained his stance against learning Marathi, citing the aggressive behavior of certain groups.

Following a strong backlash and reports of his office being attacked by MNS officials, Kedia released a video on social media platform X, apologizing for his earlier statements. “I apologize for my mistake,” Kedia said. “I have always respected and felt gratitude towards Raj Thackeray. I accept my mistake and now hope the situation will calm down. I am grateful to him.”

Kedia clarified that his controversial tweet was written under mental stress and in a disturbed state of mind, particularly after witnessing incidents of violence against non-Marathi speakers. “My tweet was misinterpreted, and some people tried to create controversy for their own benefit. After reflecting, I realize I should withdraw my statement,” he added.

The episode has reignited debates around language, identity, and regional politics in Mumbai, with Kedia’s apology aiming to de-escalate tensions and restore calm in the city.
