Mumbai: FDA Suspends Licences of Four Food Establishments Over Serious Hygiene Violations

Mumbai, 29th August 2026: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licences and registrations of four food establishments in Mumbai after inspections revealed serious hygiene and food safety violations, including cockroach infestations, repeatedly used cooking oil, rusted utensils and improper food storage.

The action followed a special inspection drive conducted by the FDA on August 25 and 27 across different parts of the city.

According to the findings, the establishments inspected included food facilities at Vidyanagari campus in Kalina, Garware Institute of Career, Craftpack Hospitality Pvt Ltd at Jio World Drive in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Indro Hotel and Restaurant on Gokhale Road in Dadar, and Bhagwati Stores at Radhika Residency in Tilak Nagar, Chembur.

During the inspections, officials reportedly found cockroaches and insects in kitchens and storage areas. Cooking oil that had been repeatedly used and had turned dark due to excessive oxidation was also detected.

The FDA further found rusted and unhygienic cooking utensils, knives and equipment, with grease, dust and organic waste accumulated on several surfaces. In some establishments, cooked rice was allegedly stored uncovered in unhygienic spaces beneath staircases.

Inspectors also noted improper segregation between vegetarian and non-vegetarian food preparation, with common spaces and equipment being used for both. The inspections additionally revealed concerns regarding the excessive use of artificial colours and Ajinomoto in certain food items.

Following the discovery of these serious violations, the FDA took immediate action and suspended the licences and registrations of the concerned food establishments.

The crackdown is part of the FDA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen food safety standards and ensure that restaurants and food businesses comply with hygiene regulations across Maharashtra.
