Mumbai: Milk Prices Set to Rise From 1st September; Retail Rates May Reach Rs 110 Per Litre
Mumbai, 29th August 2026: Mumbai households may face higher milk expenses from September 1, with prices of locally supplied fresh milk, commonly known as tabela milk, set for a significant increase.
According to reports, the Mumbai Milk Producers Association has revised the wholesale price of tabela milk from Rs 93 per litre to Rs 102 per litre. Following the revision, retail prices could reach around Rs 110 per litre, compared to the current price of approximately Rs 100 per litre.
The revised rates are expected to remain in effect until February 28, 2027.
The price hike has been attributed to rising production and operational costs faced by local milk producers. Prices of cattle feed ingredients, including green fodder, chuni (grain husks) and oil cakes, have reportedly increased by up to 25 per cent over the past year. Transport costs and expenses related to livestock maintenance have also contributed to the increase.
However, since the revision applies primarily to wholesale rates, the final retail price may vary depending on individual milk vendors and suppliers. Consumers across different parts of Mumbai may therefore see varying prices.
The increase comes ahead of the festive season, when demand for milk and dairy products traditionally rises.
Earlier this month, Maharashtra had approved a separate Rs 2 per litre increase in cow and buffalo milk prices following discussions with dairy producers and processors. However, the latest revision in Mumbai’s tabela milk prices is separate from the statewide decision and is linked specifically to the increased costs faced by local fresh milk producers.
