Mumbai: Fire Breaks Out in ICU of Dr Ambedkar Hospital; Prompt Response Ensures No Casualties

Mumbai, 21st January 2024: In a tense night for Dr Ambedkar Hospital in Vikhroli East, Mumbai, a fire erupted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) during the night between Saturday and Sunday. Thankfully, there were no reported casualties, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) attributing the incident to a cable malfunction in the air suction motor within the ICU on the ground floor.

The swift response from authorities led to the successful evacuation of all six ICU patients. Two critically ill patients, Shivaji Dhole, 65, and Vimal Tiwari, 60, were immediately transferred to Rajawadi Hospital at Ghatkopar in cardiac ambulances equipped with ventilatory support to maintain uninterrupted ICU care. The remaining four patients – Yashodabai Rathod, 58, Kantaprasad Nirmal, 75, Arun Haribhagat, 64, and Sushmita Ghokhshe, 23 – were relocated to casualty wards within Ambedkar Hospital for ongoing treatment.

BMC officials confirmed that all four patients in the casualty wards are in stable condition. The fire, believed to have originated from a cable malfunction in the air suction motor, was successfully extinguished around 2:55 am, showcasing the efficiency of the emergency response team.

The hospital administration and BMC have ensured a thorough review of safety protocols, equipment, and infrastructure to enhance the overall preparedness of healthcare facilities in the face of unforeseen emergencies.
