Mumbai: Fire Brigade Battles Major Blaze in Goregaon West Furniture Godown; No Casualties Reported

Mumbai, 16th March 2024: A significant fire incident occurred on Thursday afternoon in a furniture godown situated on Ram Mandir Road in Goregaon West, Mumbai. The fire, which broke out around 3:30 pm, was successfully extinguished by 8:15 pm, with no reported injuries, according to fire officials.

The blaze originated within the premises of a single-storey structure near Narayan Plaza in Goregaon West. In response, eight fire engines, seven jumbo tankers, and additional fire brigade vehicles, along with an ambulance, were promptly dispatched to the scene for firefighting efforts. The intensity of the fire prompted authorities to classify it as a level 2 (major fire) incident at 4:10 pm.

According to fire officials, the fire primarily affected garments, wooden stock, scrap materials, and fabrication items stored in approximately 10 to 15 units on the ground floor, as well as partially on another floor, covering an area of approximately 2000 sq. ft. The rapid spread of the fire was facilitated by the presence of wooden materials within the premises. Firefighters successfully contained the blaze from all sides within three hours. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

However, a civic official from the P South ward disclosed that the affected plot, owned by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), housed several unauthorized structures, including shanties, wooden warehouses, and furniture shops. The revelation suggests that some of these structures may have been constructed illegally.
