Mumbai Local Train Machete Attack: Three Accused on the Run

Mumbai, 16th July 2026: In yet another violent incident on Mumbai’s suburban railway network, a young man was seriously injured after being attacked with a machete by three unidentified men inside a moving Central Railway local train near Thakurli railway station in the early hours of Thursday.

The incident comes just days after the fatal attack on a commuter aboard a Western Railway local train, raising fresh concerns over passenger safety on Mumbai’s lifeline.

According to preliminary information, the victim was travelling from Mumbai to Ambernath when the attack took place at around 12:10 a.m. in the general compartment of the train. Police said an argument had broken out between two passengers. During the altercation, three men allegedly assaulted the youth with a machete, inflicting multiple injuries.

After the attack, the accused got off the train at Thakurli railway station and fled the scene before authorities could apprehend them.

The incident came to light when the train reached Kalyan railway station, where Railway Police were informed. The injured youth was immediately shifted to Rukminibai Hospital in Kalyan for treatment. Doctors said he had sustained serious injuries and remains under medical care.

Railway Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Officials are examining CCTV footage from Thakurli and nearby stations and recording statements of passengers and witnesses to identify the attackers. A search operation has been initiated to trace the three accused, who remain absconding.

The latest attack has intensified concerns over security on Mumbai’s suburban railway system, which carries millions of passengers every day. Commuter groups have repeatedly urged railway authorities to strengthen surveillance, increase the deployment of security personnel and implement stricter measures to curb violent crimes on local trains.
