Mumbai: Man Suffers Severe Burns After Climbing Mumbai Local Train Roof at Ghatkopar
Ghatkopar, 19th August 2026: A man suffered severe burn injuries after allegedly climbing onto the roof of a local train and coming into contact with an overhead electric wire (OHE) at Ghatkopar railway station on Tuesday evening. The incident disrupted Central Railway services during the evening peak hours.
According to railway officials, the incident took place around 6:33 pm when a CSMT–Titwala fast local was standing at Platform No. 3 at Ghatkopar station. The unidentified man allegedly attempted to climb onto the roof of the train and came into contact with the overhead wire.
He suffered an electric shock and sustained serious injuries. Following the incident, railway authorities immediately shut down the OHE power supply on the down fast line as a safety precaution. Railway Protection Force personnel brought the injured man down from the train and rushed him to a hospital. His identity is yet to be established.
The OHE power supply was switched off from 6:38 pm to 6:47 pm, affecting local and mail-express services on the route. Train operations resumed after railway officials completed the necessary safety checks and restored the power supply.
The CSMT–Titwala fast local, which had arrived at Ghatkopar at 6:33 pm, departed at 6:52 pm, resulting in a delay of around 19 minutes. Several other trains were also held up, causing further disruption to the evening timetable.
The incident occurred during the peak commuting hours, leading to increased crowds at Ghatkopar, Kurla and Dadar stations. Several local services continued to run around 10 to 15 minutes late as the railway authorities worked to restore normal operations.
Railway authorities have initiated the necessary procedures, while the identity of the injured man and the exact circumstances surrounding his attempt to climb onto the train roof are being ascertained.
