Mumbai: Preserving Nature’s Heritage: Dahisar Mangrove Park Unveils Mumbai’s Green Sanctuary

Mumbai, 21st November 2023: In a significant stride towards environmental conservation and sustainable tourism, Mumbai is gearing up for the Dahisar Mangrove Park, a new ecological marvel nestled amid 200 acres of flourishing mangroves. This initiative underscores the city’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage.

With the state forest department’s mangrove protection cell recently issuing a tender worth ₹45.78 crore, the Dahisar Mangrove Park is set to offer more than just greenery. Envisioned as an educational hub, the park will feature a mangrove museum, a captivating suspended glass bridge, and a nature interpretation centre, providing insights into the unique mangrove ecosystem.

1. Mangrove Museum: A dedicated space offering knowledge about diverse mangrove species and their ecosystem role.
2. Suspended Glass Bridge: An architectural wonder providing panoramic views of the mangroves.
3. Boardwalk: A 700-metre pathway leading visitors into the heart of the mangroves for an immersive experience.
4. Nature Interpretation Centre: A 5,100 sq. metre facility offering literature and knowledge about local birds and habitats.

Situated in Dahisar, the park is easily accessible via Link Road or by boat from the Gorai Jetty. This location was chosen to safeguard the remaining mangroves, particularly after losses due to encroachment in areas like Ganpat Patil Nagar.

SY Ramarao, the additional chief principal conservator of forest (mangrove protection cell), highlights the simultaneous focus on completing the Gorai mangrove park and the Dahisar project. Part of the Government of Maharashtra’s Mangrove Conservation & Development of Mangrove Park at Dahisar, the park aligns with the Dahisar River Rejuvenation Project.

Adjacent to a dumping ground, the nature conservation and interpretation centre, covering 1,517 sq. metres, will act as an educational nucleus, fostering awareness about mangrove importance. The 700-metre boardwalk aims to provide an intimate experience of the mangrove environment.

Projected for completion in mid-2024, the Dahisar Mangrove Park aspires to become a cornerstone in Mumbai’s eco-tourism and conservation endeavours. With a harmonious blend of environmental protection, education, and sustainable tourism, the park sets a benchmark for future ecological projects in the city.
