Mumbai’s Thane Creek Bridge-3 Poised for April Opening, Full Completion by October

Mumbai/Thane, 19th January 2024: The Thane Creek Bridge-3 project is set to open one lane in April, with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) targeting the completion of all six lanes by October. This development, designed to accommodate the expected surge in vehicular traffic due to the Navi Mumbai International Airport, involves the expansion of Thane Creek Bridge-2.

Key Details:

– Alignment: A 1.8 km-long bridge over Thane Creek, running parallel to Thane Creek Bridge-2, featuring 3 plus 3 lanes each (totalling six lanes).

– Benefits:
– Enhanced connectivity between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai upon full opening.
– Addressing transportation needs for commercial vehicles to and from Jawaharlal Nehru Port.
– Efficient traffic dispersal from the old bridge across Thane Creek with additional lanes.
– Beneficial for motorists travelling from central suburbs and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

– Challenges:
– Conducting construction without disturbing marine biodiversity.
– Building trust with the fisherfolk community to ensure no loss of livelihood.
– Protection of nearby mangrove areas, flamingoes, and mudflats.

– Cost: The project is estimated at Rs 775 crore.

– Progress: The overall project has achieved 68% completion.

According to Nitin Borule, MSRDC executive engineer, the goal is to complete the construction of Thane Creek Bridge-3 by the end of October. The one-side road from Mumbai to Vashi on TCB-3 is already prepared and is expected to be finished by April. Toll lanes have been strategically implemented to ensure efficient traffic flow on this road.

This development not only signifies substantial progress in Mumbai’s infrastructure but also underscores the commitment to environmental conservation and community engagement in the construction process.
