Navi Mumbai Police Solve Murder Case After Identifying Killer Through CCTV Footage
Navi Mumbai, 5th September 2024: Following the discovery of a man’s body along the Thane-Belapur road near Ghansoli last month, Navi Mumbai police were faced with a murder investigation. Initially, the crime scene yielded no significant evidence, and early reviews of CCTV footage provided no useful information. However, upon a second review of the footage, investigators noticed a bike passing through the area in the dark.
On August 5, around 3 a.m., the Navi Mumbai police received a call from a food delivery worker reporting an injured man walking on the Thane-Belapur road near Ghansoli, who claimed to have been robbed. When police arrived, they were unable to locate the individual. The following morning, a body was found on the road. A post-mortem examination revealed the cause of death to be a stabbing, prompting the police to open a murder investigation.
The first challenge was to identify the deceased. A note in the victim’s shirt pocket identified him as Sushil Kumar Vind, a 25-year-old vegetable vendor from Mulund. Vind had been in Ghansoli to purchase vegetables from the APMC market.
Due to the dark conditions where the body was discovered, finding clues proved difficult. For nearly two weeks, police reviewed CCTV footage but initially found nothing of interest. Eventually, a clip showing a bike stopping near the crime scene drew attention.
Investigators suspected that the biker might have been interacting with Vind. Although the bike’s registration number was not visible, police tracked its headlights through the footage and discovered that the biker met another person on a bike in Kopar Khairane.
The registration number of this second bike was obtained, leading to the identification of the rider as Sameer Shaikh, 23, a drug addict recently released from a rehabilitation centre.
Shaikh was arrested on August 21. According to police, Shaikh had attempted to rob Vind to obtain money for drugs, and a confrontation led to Vind being fatally stabbed.
