9 Tonnes of Waste Generated at Coldplay Concert in Navi Mumbai

Navi Mumbai, 21st January 2025: The Coldplay concert at D Y Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Saturday night, attended by 75,000 fans, resulted in the generation of 9 tonnes (9,000 kg) of waste. Civic teams worked until 3 am on Sunday to clear the litter, which included plastic tiffin boxes, bottles, glasses, banned plastic carry bags, and cardboard food containers, with each fan contributing over 100 grams of waste.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) deployed 150 workers to manage waste segregation and disposal, beginning the cleanup at 10 pm. As one of India’s top three cleanest cities, NMMC committed to maintaining high cleanliness standards during the event, adhering to its zero-waste policy.

With two more Coldplay concerts scheduled for Sunday and Tuesday, municipal workers are expected to continue their busy schedule.

On Sunday morning, walkers and joggers were pleased to see the area around the stadium in pristine condition, despite the large crowd the previous evening. NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde personally oversaw the cleanup efforts.

Over 200,000 fans are expected to attend the three-day concert series. The event also serves as an opportunity to showcase Navi Mumbai’s commitment to environmental responsibility, aligning with the Swachh Bharat Mission’s waste management practices.

Shinde explained the waste management strategy, which includes strategically placed bins for proper segregation. Plastic bottles are sent for recycling, while organic waste is processed at Turbhe’s facility. Ten refuse vehicles are scheduled to collect waste 182 times throughout the event. Cleanup operations began in Nerul on January 12, addressing roads, pavements, and dividers.
