Mumbai: Western Railway collects Rs 170.35 crore in fines from ticketless passengers in 2022-23

Mumbai, 7th April 2023: Mumbai’s Western Railway has successfully implemented a ticket-checking campaign across local, mail-express, and special trains. During the year 2022-23, the campaign has collected a fine of Rs 170.35 crore from 25.63 lakh passengers traveling without tickets.
The Ticket Scrutiny Team is working under the guidance of senior officers to provide better service to passengers with valid tickets and to reduce the inconvenience caused by ticketless passengers. The Mumbai section accounted for Rs 43.07 crore of the total amount.
During the previous year 2021-22, Rs 113.57 crore fine was collected from ticketless passengers. However, in 2022-23, the fine amount has increased to Rs 170.35 crore. In March 2023, a total of 1.94 lakh passengers were found carrying luggage without reservations or traveling without tickets, and a fine of Rs 12.07 crore was collected from them. A special team of ticket inspectors collected Rs 3.08 crore from the Mumbai division during March 2023.
Furthermore, more than 48,691 passengers who traveled without tickets in air-conditioned locals have been fined since April 2022. Western Railway officials have been taking strict action against passengers violating the rules, and the campaign is expected to continue in the future. The ticket-checking campaign has helped improve the travel experience for passengers and promote fair practices.
