Mumbai, 14th August 2023: In a significant breakthrough, authorities from the Customs Department’s Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) foiled an effort by contrabandists to smuggle diamonds worth Rs 1.5 crore at Mumbai’s international airport on Wednesday. The main suspect in this case, identified as Mukkim Raza Ashraf Mansuri, was apprehended by customs officials at the airport.

The accused, who is a resident of Dubai, arrived on a flight from the emirate on Wednesday. Astoundingly, the smuggler had cleverly concealed 34 diamonds in tea bags in an attempt to disguise the rare gems as common objects. However, officials confiscated diamonds totalling 1559.68 carats from him, with a market value of Rs. 1 crore 49 lakh.

According to Customs Department sources, Mansuri’s unlawful trade was on the verge of success as he sought payment for his illegal actions. However, armed with intelligence, AIU officials arrested the perpetrator before he could get his payment from the other person.
