Mumbai: Labourer Dies After Falling From Multi-Story Building In Byculla; Police Register Case

Byculla, 5th September 2023: In a tragic incident, a 30-year-old labourer lost his life after falling from the 20th floor of an under-construction building in Byculla. Agripada Police have swiftly taken action, registering a case against two owners of a contracting company, an engineer, and a labourer supplier, all allegedly involved in the worker’s tragic demise.
The victim, identified as Shakur Kamraj Sheikh, was labouring at the Kalapani Junction construction site in Byculla (West) on a Sunday evening when the incident occurred. Despite the fact that Sheikh was working on a construction site, it has come to light that necessary safety equipment was not provided to him, which could have potentially prevented this tragedy.
One concerning detail is that at the time of the accident, neither the supervisor, the engineer, nor the security officer were present at the site. This raises questions about the overall safety practices and management of the construction project.
Agripada Police Sub-Inspector Mukesh Shirasath, upon receiving information about the incident, immediately arrived at the scene to initiate an investigation. Statements from witnesses have been recorded.
According to one of the workers, Sheikh was working on the 20th floor and tragically fell while handling bricks. The colleague further revealed that Sheikh had not been provided with any safety equipment, adding to the gravity of the situation.
It has also been revealed that Sheikh was not a registered worker, and his company had failed to take out any insurance in his name. These lapses raise further concerns about the treatment and protection of labourers at the site.
In response to these allegations, the company’s contractor has claimed that safety equipment, including a harness, safety belt, and safety helmet, had been provided to Sheikh, but he did not wear it on that day.
