Mumbai: Crime Branch Police Apprehend Armed Robbery Accused And Member Of Chota Rajan Gang After 29 Years

Mumbai, 7th October 2023: The Crime Branch Police have successfully apprehended a ruffian and member of the Chhota Rajan gang who was involved in an armed robbery case 29 years ago. The accused was detained by the Crime Branch Police from Gujrat, where he has been living with a fake identity after earlier being able to escape from police arrest.

The accused, identified as Sakir Barkat Ali Lakhani (59), was earlier arrested by the Mumbai police in connection with the case of armed robbery in an estate agent’s shop in Chembur, Sindhi Camp, with deadly weapons. They also attacked the police personnel that came to stop them. In this case, the Crime Branch had registered a case under Sections 399, 307, 353, and 402 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 27 of the Indian Weapons Act.

Accordingly, the session court sentenced the accused to five years of imprisonment. However, in the deadliest encounter of his three accomplices in a police encounter, Lakhani managed to abscond from the police arrest, prompting the session court to issue a non-bailable warrant against him. Following the lookout of the accused with modern technologies, police found the lead, pinpointing the accused’s traced location at Surat in Gujrat.

Promptly, one of the teams of Crime Branch Police went to Surat and conducted an inspection. In their investigation, they found that the accused was living here, hiding his original identity. Subsequently, he was taken into custody.

According to the police, a total of 10 cases of robbery, forcible theft, motor vehicle theft, and fraud have been registered against Lakhani in Mumbai and Gujarat.
