Hit-and-Run Incident Claims Life of Former Intel India Head Avtar Saini in Navi Mumbai

Navi Mumbai, 29th February 2024: Former Intel India head Avtar Saini, renowned for leading the design of the Pentium processor, tragically passed away on Wednesday morning in Navi Mumbai. The 68-year-old, cycling with a group, was struck by a speeding taxi on Palm Beach Road in Nerul at around 5.50 am. Despite wearing a helmet, Saini sustained severe injuries and was declared dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital.

The hit-and-run driver, attempting to escape, had Saini’s bicycle wedged under the car, dragging him for a distance. Fellow cyclists captured the driver, who was later handed over to the police. Charges of rash driving and causing death due to negligence have been filed, although the driver remains unarrested.

Residing in Chembur, Saini lived alone following his wife’s demise three years ago. His son and daughter, residing in the US, were expecting his visit next month.

Gokul V Subramaniam, Intel India president, expressed sorrow over Saini’s passing, emphasizing his role in establishing the Intel R&D centre in India. In a LinkedIn post, Subramaniam hailed Saini as a prolific inventor, outstanding leader, and valuable mentor during his tenure at Intel from 1982 to 2004, where he contributed to the design of processors such as Intel 386, Intel 486, and the iconic Pentium.
