Mumbai, 3rd November 2023: The Oshiwara police in Mumbai have filed a case against television actor Urfi Javed for orchestrating an elaborate ruse that led to a wild goose chase and tarnished the image of the Mumbai police.
The incident unfolded when Javed posted a video on X (formerly Twitter), featuring two women posing as constables in police uniforms, seemingly picking her up from outside a coffee shop in Andheri (West) and escorting her to a black SUV labeled “police” on the glass.
The four accomplices involved in the act have also been implicated in the case. The misleading post, initially shared by Mix Masala on X, falsely claimed that “‘Urfi Javed’ is detained by Mumbai police for wearing inappropriate clothes in public places.” The message quickly went viral, prompting the Oshiwara police to launch a frantic search for Javed.
Ultimately, it was revealed that the entire episode was a scripted publicity stunt orchestrated by Javed herself. The Oshiwara police disclosed that Javed hired two women to play constables and a man to portray an inspector in the 38-second video.
Investigations revealed that Javed paid Rs 1,000 to each of the individuals portraying cops, who were identified as extras in the Bollywood industry. Additionally, she paid Rs 2,000 to the production manager who facilitated the arrangement. After casting a negative light on the Mumbai police, Javed reportedly switched off her mobile phone, leaving behind a message claiming she was in Dubai.
The police assert that the motive behind the stunt was to boost Javed’s social media following. As of now, no arrests have been made in the case. Notices have been issued to both the individuals seen in the video and Urfi Javed.
DCP (Zone IX) Krishnakant Upadhaya stated that a case has been registered under Indian Penal Code sections 171 (Wearing garb or carrying a token used by a public servant with fraudulent intent), 419 (Impersonation), 500 (Defamation), and 34 (Common intention) against Javed and the four others involved in defaming the Mumbai police. The vehicle featured in the video has been seized, and Ganpat, who played the role of the inspector, has been taken into custody. Further actions and investigations are underway.
