After Rains Caused Chaos And Disruptions In Mumbai, IMD Issued An Orange Alert For The City

Heavy to Very Heavy Rains Batter Mumbai in Last 24 Hours, Widespread Impact

Mumbai, 25th June 2023: After a prolonged wait, the much-anticipated rains arrived in Mumbai today, providing some relief from the scorching heat. However, the downpour quickly turned into a cause of concern for Mumbaikars as water accumulation and subsequent flooding plagued several parts of the city. Pedestrians and motorists in the city found themselves grappling with the challenges posed by the waterlogging in the low-lying areas. Local services were also running late by 15 to 20 minutes.

The Meteorological Department has issued a forecast stating that the monsoon is set to become active within the next 48 hours. The intensity of rainfall is expected to persist, prompting the authorities to issue an orange alert for heavy rain over the next 24 hours.

Apart from Mumbai, neighbouring districts, including Thane, Raigad, and Palghar, were also hit by the incessant showers. The heavy downpour led to a series of incidents within Mumbai, including the toppling of trees at 15 different locations and the partial collapse of a house. After five in the evening, heavy rain fell in the city areas such as Andheri, Kurla, Dadar, Bandra, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Malad, Vileparle, Vikhroli, etc. Locals on the Central, Western, and Harbour Railways were running 15 to 20 minutes late.

As the rain poured, certain areas of the city experienced significant waterlogging. The Andheri subway, in particular, was closed to traffic temporarily due to the excessive accumulation of water. At the same time, five to six vehicles got stuck in the water and had to be pulled out with the help of ropes. The police had to work hard to smooth the traffic.

Mumbai Traffic Police and the Municipal Corporation have issued guidelines regarding traffic. Vehicular traffic was slowed due to waterlogging in the Asalfa Sakinaka Junction area in Andheri East. Ghaffar Khan Road near Worli C-Link Gate was waterlogged, and traffic was moving slowly.
