BMC Commissioner Dr. Iqbal Singh Chahal Sets Example in Mumbai’s Cleanliness Drive, Urges Public Engagement

Mumbai, 10th February 2024: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) embarked on a comprehensive cleanliness drive today, with BMC Commissioner and Administrator Dr Iqbal Singh Chahal leading the charge by actively participating in the cleaning efforts across densely populated areas.

Under the initiative titled “Deep Clean Drive,” all 24 wards of BMC conducted simultaneous public cleanliness drives today, February 10, 2024. This initiative, directed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, aims to foster a clean, beautiful, and green Mumbai. Previously limited to seven administrative divisions, the campaign has now been expanded to encompass all wards, reflecting BMC’s commitment to ongoing cleanliness efforts.

Dr Chahal, accompanied by Deputy Commissioners and other officials, personally engaged in the thorough cleaning campaign, focusing on internal roads, footpaths, and narrow lanes. In areas such as Andheri East and Goregaon West, Dr. Chahal interacted with residents, school students, and volunteers, emphasizing the importance of public participation in maintaining cleanliness.

During the campaign, Dr Chahal addressed issues hindering cleanliness efforts, such as abandoned vehicles obstructing garbage removal and traffic flow. He promptly contacted the Joint Commissioner of Police, Mumbai Traffic Branch, to coordinate efforts for the timely removal of such vehicles. Dr. Chahal underscored the necessity for collaboration between BMC and the Traffic Police to streamline the removal process and ensure effective cleanliness maintenance.

The Commissioner’s hands-on approach and direct involvement in the cleaning activities garnered appreciation from residents and officials alike. He supervised the cleaning of streets, footpaths, and junctions, setting an example for citizens and encouraging their active participation in the cleanliness drive.

Speaking to school students in Andheri East, Dr Chahal urged them to take leadership roles in promoting cleanliness, emphasizing the pivotal role of students in shaping the future of the nation. He also stressed the importance of hygiene habits and cleanliness initiatives within educational institutions.
