Crucial Sion Road Bridge in Mumbai to Close From January 17; Traffic Diversion Details Released
Mumbai, 17th January 2024: The Sion Road Over Bridge (ROB) in Mumbai is set to be closed from Wednesday, leading to traffic diversions for commuters. The closure of the Sion ROB, a vital link connecting the eastern and western suburbs, is expected to pose challenges for numerous motorists heavily reliant on this route.
To assist motorists during the closure, traffic police have devised diversion plans, with informational boards indicating alternative routes strategically placed at the entry and exit points of the bridge. Three main diversion routes have been identified:
1. Santacruz-Chembur Link Road via Kurla, connecting to the Eastern Express Highway.
2. Sion Hospital Road via Sulochana Shetty Marg, leading to Dr BA Road and Kumbharwada in Dharavi.
3. Chunabhatti-Bandra Kurla Complex Connector (not open to two-wheelers and three-wheelers).
Around 50 traffic wardens will be deployed by the Matunga traffic division, along with traffic personnel, to manage the flow and ensure smooth traffic clearance during the initial 10 days of the closure. Adjustments to the plan will be made based on the evolving situation.
Other divisions in Mahim, Chunabhatti, BKC, Chembur, Dharavi, etc., will also deploy a maximum of 50 traffic wardens within their respective jurisdiction limits. With the closure of the ROB, the Dr BA Road connecting Sion to Dharavi is expected to experience increased traffic. To manage this, the entire stretch has been designated a no-parking zone, especially in areas with residential properties.
Stringent measures have been implemented on Sulochana Shetty Marg, continuing towards Dharavi, due to narrower roads, encroachments, and residential buildings. The enforcement of no-parking zones aims to ensure smooth traffic flow, and violations will be penalized.
Concerns are anticipated at the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR), where traffic will be diverted from Sion towards the central suburbs via the Eastern Express Highway. Authorities are urging cooperation from residents and commuters during the initial phase of the closure.
