Cyclone Biparjoy Causes Turbulence and Delays at Mumbai Airport, Passengers Express Frustration

Mumbai, 12th June 2023: In the wake of Cyclone Biparjoy affecting the western coast of Maharashtra and Gujarat, including Mumbai, passengers at Mumbai airport are facing significant mental anguish. The atmospheric conditions in Mumbai have been altered by Cyclone Biparjoy, causing strong winds to sweep through the city.

Consequently, several runways at Mumbai Airport were temporarily closed for flight operations in the morning. The closure directly led to numerous flight delays, exacerbating the hardships faced by passengers.
Although the cyclone did not make a direct impact on the Konkan coast, coastal areas experienced strong winds. The cyclone also resulted in a delay of almost a week in the onset of the monsoon season in Maharashtra.

However, today’s situation gained further attention when frustrated netizens shared videos of the chaotic scenes on social media platforms, sparking widespread discussions. It led some airlines to seek an apology from passengers.

Responding to the escalating complaints from passengers at the airport, Air India released a statement acknowledging the adverse effects of weather changes and the temporary closure of the 9/27 runway. Their official tweet read, “Due to weather changes, the 9/27 runway closure at the airport was temporarily closed. In addition, some aircraft are delayed and some flights are cancelled due to other factors beyond our control. We apologise for this. Also, we are trying to resolve this at the earliest.”

IndiGo, another prominent airline, responded to a passenger’s tweet by acknowledging the frustration caused by delayed flights. They reiterated that such changes in schedules are often necessitated by circumstances beyond their control. Their statement read, “Delayed flights have become a pain for us too. It is because of things beyond our control that we have to change the schedule.”
