Decisive Victory in Thane: Naresh Mhaske Triumphs Over Incumbent MP Rajan Vichare

Thane, 5th June 2024: Thane witnessed a decisive victory as Shiv Sena’s Naresh Mhaske secured the Thane Lok Sabha seat by an impressive margin of 2,17,011 votes, triumphing over incumbent MP and fellow Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Rajan Baburao Vichare.
According to Election Commission of India (ECI) data, Mhaske, a former Thane mayor, garnered a commendable 7,34,231 votes, while Vichare managed to secure 5,17,220 votes.
The win in Thane carries significant weight, particularly for Maharashtra Chief Minister Ekanth Shinde, as it stands as his home turf and holds immense prestige. Rajan Vichare, who had previously clinched victory as an undivided Shiv Sena nominee in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, faced a formidable challenge in this election.
Thane, often regarded as ‘Mumbai’s Elder Sister’, holds historical significance within Maharashtra’s political landscape. It was once part of the Colaba Lok Sabha constituency before gaining autonomy. Over the years, it has alternated between being a stronghold of the BJP and Shiv Sena, with occasional successes by other parties like the NCP.
Rajan Vichare, a seasoned politician with two prior victories in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, faced stiff competition in the recent polls. The constituency, boasting a total of 25,07,372 registered voters, witnessed a turnout of 52.09%, with 13,06,194 votes cast during the May 20, 2024, polling held during phase 5 of the elections.
In the previous Lok Sabha polls, Vichare emerged victorious with significant margins, showcasing his political acumen and rapport with the electorate. However, in this latest electoral showdown, Mhaske’s triumph underscores the shifting dynamics within Thane’s political landscape and signifies a notable victory for Shiv Sena in the region.
