Mumbai, 27th October 2022: Residents of Mumbai Municipal Corporation buildings and chalis in Sector 1 of Dharavi have staged a dharna from 10 am on Thursday to demand that they get a house of 650 to 750 square feet under the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. Residents are protesting outside the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) office (Mhada Bhawan) in Bandra East.

DRP has recently invited tenders for the redevelopment of Dharavi. The tendering process for this project has been going on since 2009, but it could not be completed. Therefore, redevelopment could not take place. As a result, there is a lot of resentment among Dharavikars. The residents of Sector 1 are alleging that the residents are not being properly considered in the redevelopment. Sector 1 has a large number of chalis and buildings of Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Residents of these chalis/buildings should be given houses of 650 to 750 square feet, as per the new rules. But actually, 405 square feet of houses are being given. Alleging that this is injustice, the residents of Sector 1 attacked the office of DRP on Thursday.

Multiple residents are participating in this movement. However, due to Section 144, Shahu Nagar Police detained some protesters in Dharavi. Some residents gathered outside Mhada Bhawan in Bandra and started a dharna protest. Even after this protest, the protestors have warned if a decision is not taken to give 750 square feet of houses, the protest will be intensified.
