Fire Breaks Out at Historic Byculla Police Station in Mumbai; No Casualties Reported
Mumbai, 27th July 2026: A fire broke out on Sunday night at the historic Byculla Police Station in eastern Mumbai, damaging the first-floor administrative section of the British-era building. Firefighters responded swiftly and brought the blaze under control, with no injuries or casualties reported.
The incident occurred at around 8:30 pm at the police station located on Hansraj Marg in Byculla East. According to officials, the fire erupted in the offices of the Administrative Inspector and Public Relations Inspector situated on the first floor.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Jayant Meena said the Mumbai Fire Brigade acted promptly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further. Preliminary findings suggest that a short circuit may have caused the blaze, though the exact reason is yet to be confirmed. An investigation has been initiated.
Officials noted that the fire spread quickly because much of the building’s internal structure, including the wooden slabs and staircases, is made of timber. Despite the damage, the timely response by emergency services prevented the incident from escalating.
The Byculla Police Station is one of Mumbai’s oldest police stations, constructed by the British in 1924. Designed on the lines of Scotland Yard police stations, the heritage building is considered an important historical landmark in the city. It had undergone repair and restoration work about a year ago under the guidance of the Archaeological Department to preserve its heritage value.
Authorities confirmed that no police personnel or members of the public were injured in the incident, and further assessment of the damage is underway. The exact cause of the fire will be determined after the completion of the investigation.
