HCG Cancer Centre Mumbai launches a dedicated STOMA Care Clinic for cancer patients

Mumbai, 16 December 2022 –HCG Cancer Centre Borivali in association with Coloplast Academy has launched a dedicated STOMA Care Clinic for cancer patients who have undergone Ostomy Surgery. The clinic is operational between 2 pm to 4 pm on every Wednesday of the week.

This clinic will offer holistic treatment, provide better care, as well as create awareness for stoma patients to make them as independent as possible. Stoma is an artificial opening created surgically for cancer patients or sometimes for non-cancer patients who have a condition, where the natural passages like the rectum or the bladder are removed permanently, and a new opening is made on the abdominal wall for faeces and/or urine.

This artificially created opening, aids in discharge of urine and stool. Since it is not a natural opening, stomas require artificial fitting for collection and disposal of urine or faeces, which could require specialised care. A person who has undergone a stoma surgery is called an ostomate.

The Stoma Care Clinic, in addition to conducting the Ostomy Surgeries, will also provide protective care and early identification of complications. The clinic has been equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, will provide pre-operative and post-operative counselling, including lifestyle modifications for patients to prevent psychological trauma.

Dr. Tushar Pawar, Consultant Surgical Oncologist, HCG Cancer Centre Borivali said “The specialised clinic will be a boon to stoma patients who will now have access to a dedicated facility to seek specialised stoma-related treatment. The aim of this clinic is to provide protective care and early identification of complications. It will also offer advice regarding lifestyle modification. By bringing oncology and non-oncology services together under one roof, we can provide more comprehensive support to patients coming to us at different stages of their lifecycle”.

Dr. Santosh Shinde, Chief Operating Officer, HCG Cancer Centre Borivali said “At HCG, we have always aimed at providing holistic care to our patients. The launch of this clinic will take this focus forward towards more evolved and advanced healthcare systems that focus on prevention over treatment. The clinicians at the HCG STOMA Care Clinic are highly experienced and extensively trained paramedics helmed by the best gastroenterologists and surgeons who offer Ostomy education, Counselling sessions, Comprehensive Ostomy Analysis, Stoma Site Marking and Practical tips in Ostomy Management”.
