Heavy Rains Bring Relief To Water-Scarce Navi Mumbai, Morbe Dam Too Receives Good Rainfall

Navi Mumbai, 25th June 2023: The onset of heavy rains in Maharashtra has brought much-needed respite to Navi Mumbai, which has been grappling with water scarcity. The Morbe dam area, responsible for supplying water to the city, recorded 90 millimetres of rainfall on the first day, raising hopes for a significant replenishment of water resources.

In response to the dwindling water levels in the dam, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation had implemented water reduction measures in the city since April 28, following the state government’s directives. Concerns among the residents grew as the scorching summer persisted and the first 23 days of June remained dry in Navi Mumbai and the Morbe Dam area. As a result, water supply was being restricted one day evening per week, with the possibility of extending it to two day evenings per week if rains continued to evade the region. However, the recent downpour over the weekend has brought relief to the citizens of Navi Mumbai, raising hopes for heavy rains in both the city and the Morbe Dam area.

Although Navi Mumbai is typically regarded as a water-rich municipality, this year’s scarce water reserves have prompted repeated appeals from the municipal authorities for residents to use water judiciously. Senior officials have been closely monitoring the city’s daily water supply and formulating contingency plans accordingly. Despite the onset of rains in the city, the continuation of water cuts will depend on the rainfall received in the Morbe Dam area.

The municipal administration remains vigilant regarding the water supply situation in Navi Mumbai and has taken adequate precautions to ensure its availability. Last year, due to insufficient rainfall in the dam area, the Morbe Dam was not able to reach its maximum capacity. Currently, the dam holds a mere 23.67 percent of its total storage capacity, providing a supply that will last for approximately 34 days, i.e. until July 27. Despite the recent rainfall, the Municipal Corporation continues to urge citizens to conserve water and use it wisely.
