Local Medicine Seller Cheated Of Rs. 2.75 Lakh In Online Delivery Scam

Kalyan, 15th July 2023: In a distressing incident, Pooja Umesh Singh, a respected medicine seller residing in the Katemanivali area of Kalyan, has fallen victim to an online scam, losing an alarming amount of Rs. 2.75 lakh. The fraud took place between the months of May and June.

Pooja Umesh Singh runs a medical store in the Tisgaon Jarimarinagar region of Kalyan. On one day when she was sitting in her shop, one guy named Daniel Jack came to buy some medicines. During the transaction, Daniel cunningly managed to obtain Pooja’s personal contact details, including her phone number.

Two days later, Pooja received an unexpected message on WhatsApp from Daniel, claiming that she had received a package from a private shipping company. Shortly after, a person identifying themselves as Ram Chali contacted Pooja, asserting that the package, purportedly arriving from abroad, required a customs duty payment of Rs. 25,000 for delivery to her.

Furthermore, Ram Chali threatened Pooja that if she failed to pay the stipulated amount, it would result in the filing of a criminal case against her. Fearing the consequences, Pooja complied with the demand and made an initial online transaction to the person’s bank account.

Unfortunately, the situation worsened as Pooja found herself coerced into making subsequent payments totaling Rs. 75,000. These additional charges were collected in the name of customs duty-free rates, dollar exchange rates, income tax, transportation costs, and other false claims. Despite complying with all demands, Pooja did not receive the promised item.

Realising that she had been duped, Pooja confronted Daniel, but his responses were evasive and unhelpful, fueling her suspicions further. Pooja immediately filed a police complaint at the Kolsewadi police station. The authorities have registered the case and are now actively investigating it.
