Maharashtra: Schools To Introduce Dress Code Mandate for Teachers to Enhance Professionalism

Pune, 16th March 2024: The school education department has issued a directive mandating a dress code for teachers across all management schools in the state. Additionally, teachers are instructed to have ‘TR’ in English and ‘T’ in Marathi added before their names.

This decision, released by the school education department, underscores the pivotal role of teachers as mentors and role models for the future generation. Given their extensive interactions with students, parents, and various stakeholders, the department emphasizes the importance of maintaining a professional appearance that reflects positively on the school and their position.

The guidelines specify appropriate attire for both female and male teachers, with options including sarees, churidar-salwar, kurtas, dupattas for female teachers, and shirts, trousers, and shoes for male teachers. Schools are urged to establish a uniform dress code, including specific colours and footwear coordination. Exceptions are granted for medical reasons, allowing teachers to opt for alternative footwear.

Moreover, it is stipulated that teachers associated with scout guide programs adhere to the designated attire. Additionally, all teachers are required to have ‘TR’ in English and ‘T’ in Marathi affixed before their names, with the education commissioner overseeing the approval of the sign for this purpose. This designation may also be displayed on teachers’ vehicles.

The guidelines discourage the wearing of dark-coloured clothing, garments with pictorial embroidery, or jeans and t-shirts while on school premises. By adhering to these regulations, teachers are expected to uphold professionalism and set a positive example for their students.
