Maharashtra to Bid Farewell to Winter Chill After February 11, Predicts Meteorological Experts

Mumbai, 5th February 2024: The prolonged winter chill in Maharashtra is anticipated to persist until February 11, after which warmer temperatures are expected to gradually take over. Meteorologists attribute the extended cold spell to successive western cyclones generating wind speeds ranging from 270 to 300 kilometres per hour in the upper layers of the atmosphere. This year, the impact of cold weather lingered until the second week of February, intensifying around February 6th or 7th and peaking until the 11th.

Throughout January, Maharashtra experienced colder-than-usual conditions, with the North Side, in particular, facing record-cold weather. Weather scientist Manikrao Khule explains that a series of western cyclones, inducing the rain in North India, contributed to the prolonged cold spell. The westerly winds at high speeds intensified the force of cold, mirroring the conditions observed in January.

Over the next three days, a gradual increase in both maximum and minimum temperatures is expected, leading to a reduction in the severity of the cold. Certain areas, including Nandurbar, Dhule, and Jalgaon districts in Khandesh, may experience partly cloudy weather, while Konkan and Central Maharashtra are likely to witness a rise in temperatures, potentially resulting in a heatwave.

However, meteorologists predict the possibility of another cycle of cold from February 5th to 11th due to an impending western cyclone in the western Himalayan region. This cycle is anticipated to bring a renewed bout of cold to Maharashtra before bidding farewell. Manikrao Khule emphasizes that this may mark the concluding phase of the winter season.
