Mumbai Airport to Demolish and Rebuild Terminal 1, Enhance Passenger Capacity

Mumbai, 29th January 2025: The Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) announced on Tuesday that Terminal 1 will be demolished and rebuilt to boost passenger capacity. The project will begin in phases starting November 2025.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is managed by MIAL and operated by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL).
“The phased redevelopment of Terminal 1 will begin in November 2025 and is designed to minimize disruptions,” MIAL stated. During construction, Terminal 2 (T2) will handle the increased traffic.
The first phase will see the demolition of the existing terminal, followed by the construction of a new facility. The upgraded Terminal 1 is expected to handle 20 million passengers annually, increasing its capacity by 42%, the release noted. The new terminal is slated for completion by 2028-29.
To manage the capacity gap during the redevelopment, T2 and the Navi Mumbai International Airport, also developed by the Adani Group, will support the traffic load. Navi Mumbai International Airport is set to begin operations this year.
AAHL Director Jeet Adani expressed confidence in the redevelopment process: “Our team at CSMIA is working closely with stakeholders to ensure smooth operations during the transition. This redevelopment aims to not only expand capacity but also secure Mumbai’s future on the global aviation map.”
