Mumbai: BJP Opposes BMC’s Decision To Ban PoP Ganesh Idols Having Height Less Than Four Feet

Mumbai, 19th June 2023: The sculpture industry has a big impact in terms of employment for youth. An overall ban on the idols made up of Plaster of Paris (PoP) will be devastating for the people who have been employed in this profession over the years.

Ashish Shelar, president of the Mumbai Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said that we oppose any such decision by the Mumbai Municipal Corporation in this matter.

He was speaking yesterday (June 18) at the grand gatherings of idolaters from Maharashtra at Parel. Lalbagh-Paral Ganesha Murtikar Sangh organised this gathering. “Don’t close the Ganesh idol factory, which has a turnover of crores and provides employment to Marathi youth, and kill the employment of Marathi people,” said Shelar at the gathering.

Sculpture is a big industry, with many jobs generated in this industry every year. The idols created in Maharashtra have a turnover of around 80 thousand crores all over the world. “We are against whoever is trying to shut down such a big industry. If there is an attempt to ban the statue of POP, it is not in the interest of Maharashtra and the country,” he added.

Shelar further said that scientists confirmed the facts that POP idols can be dissolved scientifically and can also be disposed of without harming the environment, so the government should decide by taking all these things into consideration.

“The Mumbai Municipal Corporation had earlier issued a circular that the idols below four feet should be made of Shadu clay, which is unacceptable to us, and I have spoken to the Municipal Commissioner, Deputy Chief Minister, and Chief Minister in this context. Our position is that the employment of Marathi people should not suffer in any case,” Ashish Shelar explained.
