Mumbai: Central Railway Boosts Passenger Safety; CCTV Cameras To Be Installed In Trains

Mumbai, 5th October 2023: Every day, incidences of pickpocketing and mobile theft are increasing on Mumbai local trains. Similarly, the incidences of chain snatching and molestation of women are also increasing on the crowded local trains. Taking due cognizance of it, the Central Railway has decided to install CCTV cameras in the compartments of the local train. For this, the Central Railway has installed 1094 CCTV cameras in 311 coaches.

The General Manager of Central Railway, Naresh Lalwani, was providing information regarding this while talking at the meeting of the 124th Zonal Railway User Advisory Committee yesterday. The annual meeting of the Zonal Railway User Advisory Committee took place on Wednesday, October 4, in the CSMT auditorium. At that time, MP Arivad Sawant, Dhananjaya Mahadik, Jaysiddheshwar Shivacharya Mahaswamiji, and a total of 39 members of the Zonal Railway User Consultative Committee (ZRUCC) were present.

Speaking at the event, Lalwani informed that the installation of CCTV cameras in local trains is increasing, looking at the increasing incidences of various crimes in the crowded local trains. “For this purpose, so far, 2,132 CCTV cameras have been installed in a total of 364 coaches of Vande Bharat Express, including Diesel Multiple Unit (DEMU), Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit (MEMU), and Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches.”

He further informed that the Central Railway has set a record by carrying more than 8 crore metric tonnes of freight in the financial year 2022-23. “Along with this, the laying of 258 km of new route and the doubling of the route have been completed. In this financial year, a total of 174 escalators and 138 lifts have been installed on Central Railway by installing 8 escalators and 8 lifts. Also, it is planned to install 18 more escalators and 25 lifts in the current financial year,” Lalwani said.
