Mumbai: Class 11 to Begin from July 1, Directorate of Education Grants Schools Flexibility

Mumbai, 22nd May 2025: In a significant move aimed at safeguarding students’ academic interests, the Directorate of Education has allowed school managements across Maharashtra to begin Class 11 sessions from July 1, 2025, instead of the previously scheduled August 11.

The directive, issued to all Divisional Deputy Directors of Education, Education Officers, and Inspectors, permits schools to start classes after completing 50% of the total intake capacity in junior colleges or from July 1, whichever is earlier.

This decision follows a government order dated May 6, 2025, which had initially set the start date for Class 11 as August 11. However, the ongoing nature of the admission process extends until every eligible student is placed, has historically delayed the starting  commencing of academic sessions.

Citing the need to reduce learning gaps and maximize instructional time, the Directorate of Education has now empowered schools to exercise flexibility in beginning the academic year earlier. “This move ensures that students who complete admission early are not left waiting unnecessarily,” said an official from the Directorate.

All concerned authorities have been instructed to implement the decision uniformly. The directive is expected to help schools plan their academic calendars more effectively and avoid the usual last-minute rush.

The change has been welcomed by educationists and school administrators, who say it will streamline academic planning and reduce post-admission learning loss.

For further details, the official circular and implementation guidelines are available on the Directorate’s website and local education offices.
