Mumbai Experiences Hottest January Day Since 2016, Relief Arrives with Cooler Morning

Mumbai, 4th January 2025: After experiencing the hottest January day in Mumbai since 2016 on Friday, residents received some relief on Saturday morning as the minimum temperature dropped to 16.2°C, dipping below the normal range. However, experts have warned that the high daytime temperatures are expected to persist through the weekend.

Data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) revealed that Santacruz recorded a minimum temperature of 16.2°C on Saturday, 0.6°C below the usual levels, while Colaba recorded 20.5°C. This was a noticeable decline from Wednesday when the maximum temperatures had exceeded 20°C.

The cooler temperatures arrived after Mumbai had endured a scorching 36°C on Friday, recorded at the Santacruz station, marking the hottest January day in the past eight years. The previous record for the city’s hottest January day was set in 2016 when temperatures reached 37.3°C.

According to Sunil Kamble, Director of IMD Mumbai, the temperature fluctuations are linked to changing wind patterns. “Daytime easterly winds have contributed to the rise in maximum temperatures, while northerly winds during the night have led to a drop in minimum temperatures,” Kamble explained.

The IMD forecasted that minimum temperatures will remain between 17°C and 18°C throughout the coming week. However, a decrease in daytime temperatures is not anticipated until after January 5.
