Mumbai Police Impose Ban on Gatherings from 9th to 23rd January
Mumbai, 4th January 2025: The Mumbai police have imposed a ban on gatherings of five or more people from January 9 to 23. This restriction will begin at midnight on January 9 and continue until the same time on January 23.
Authorities clarified that this is a standard measure, with no specific intelligence reports triggering the order. However, concerns over potential disturbances to public peace and order were cited as the primary reason for the restriction.
Under the ban, assemblies, processions, and the use of loudspeakers, musical bands, and firecrackers will be prohibited. Exceptions include gatherings for weddings, funerals, events held by cooperative societies, social groups, companies, and government activities.
In another development, a 41-year-old woman, Reshma Muzaffar Qazi, allegedly murdered her 62-year-old mother, Sabira Bano Azgar Sheikh, in Mumbai’s Qureshi Nagar during a heated argument. Reshma reportedly held a grudge against her mother, believing that Sabira favoured her elder sister, a source of ongoing resentment.
Sabira, who lived in Mumbra with her son, had visited Reshma’s home when the dispute escalated. Reshma accused her mother of favouritism, and the confrontation turned violent. In a fit of rage, Reshma grabbed a knife from the kitchen and fatally stabbed Sabira. Following the incident, Reshma walked into the Chunabhatti police station and confessed to the crime.
Police arrived at the scene, confirmed Sabira’s death, and arrested Reshma. Investigations are underway to determine the motive behind the killing, with further inquiries into Reshma’s mental state and additional questioning of family members.
